Interview: Pie, an Old Brown Horse

Today I`d like to welcome Pie, the main character of Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo`s phenomenal novel Pie, An Old Brown Horse (Who Knows What He`s Doing) to Pure Jonel!
Let`s get to know him a bit better.

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

I am a 15.2 hand chestnut appendix quarter horse. I am a bit long in the tooth at 38, but who is counting. I have had many jobs, herding cattle, team penning, raising little one, lesson horse, and a therapy horse. Right now my job is to keep all the horses under control at the barn, that and making sure the supply of alfalfa and carrots have a place to go to be appreciated.

Q ~ What’s your all-time favourite pastime?

I used to love herding cattle, but after the injury it was not to be anymore. Then I went on to raising little one. That was a full time job. Now that she is grown, I have several favorite activities. One is to make sure Durango (my pasture mate) appreciates his hay. I do this by running him off of it a couple of times a night. I don’t want him to take it for granted. The second one is a process; I roll in the sand, splash water on myself, roll again and go take a snooze in the hay. I only do this after I have run Durango off his hay a couple of times. I don’t want you to think I’m getting lazy in my old age!

Q ~ Do you have a favourite food? Are you a sucker for treats?

Treats are awesome! Feel free to come by and bring me some anytime. I love alfalfa hay with a sprinkling of carrots. I’m not so fond of apples. I really don’t know why, but they just don’t do it for me anymore. My absolute favorite treat is sugar cubes. I understand that these are hard to come by now, but I will follow you everywhere for some of those. So if you come by, be sure to bring some!

Q ~ Everyone likes to be brushed and loved on, but what are your thoughts on baths?

Baths I tolerate only because I know they are going to make the rolling in the sand that much more rewarding. The keeper doesn’t much like it when I do that, but you can’t argue with success. It feels sooo good.

Q ~ Do you like to exercise or are you a laid back kind of guy?

I am a firm believer in conserving energy. I will expend it if it is necessary, like to pick on Durango, but not to a wasteful level. I can generally get my harassing of him over with in less than five minutes then it is off to the sand and nap time.

Q ~ If you could have picked your career, what would it have been?

In my dreams, I would have belonged to one of the super cowboys, like John Wayne or the Lone Ranger. I think I would have looked pretty good all dressed up in their fancy tack. Also, I know I’m much smarter that the horses they had, Silver had nothing on me, except maybe that white coat and super long mane and tail. But it’s all good; I wake up and realize I have had a great life. I am now reaping the rewards of working hard all my life.

Q ~ Throughout your time with the keeper, did you have one friend or companion who stood out above the others?

That’s easy. Dusty was my best friend of all the horses. He was an absolute horse. Even though he had many health problems when I met him, he still carried himself with dignity and grace. He looked and acted like the battle stallions of old. I still miss that guy. He ruled with an iron hoof and never had to touch anyone to do it. It was an amazing thing to watch. I still miss him. He was a great horse. He and I spent a lot of time together and when he passed, I was a little lost.

Q ~ Did you have one that you just couldn’t stand?

I have never run into a horse I couldn’t stand. There have been quite a few that I like to pick on, just because I can. You know an old horse has to have some fun in his life!

Q ~ What’s your absolute favourite thing that you’ve ever done?

I would say I had two things that were my favorite, herding cattle and barrel racing. The cattle herding is in my blood and I love doing it. To this day, if I smell cattle, I get all excited. The barrel racing is something I did with little one. I loved that she trusted me enough to go full blast in the arena. We have a special relationship. Now that I’m older, I like it when I can help out those young ones that don’t quite get a fair shake in life. That makes me feel good. Even though many are physically or mentally challenged, they feel powerful when they ride me. I can feel their joy and that makes me feel good, so good, that I often prance.

Q ~ If you could tell the keeper or little one just one thing, what would it be? Would you tell it to every horse’s keeper?

I would tell them they have it down. They know how to take care of horses. They know how we think and what to do when we don’t feel so good. Sometimes old horses get depressed when they no longer have a job to do, not at our barn. The keeper invents games and activities to keep us busy and our minds working.

I would tell the other horse’s keepers to think of the horse and how they feel. If they can do that, then they will have no problems. We are really not that complicated, even though we do each have our own personalities.

Pie, An Old Brown Horse by Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo

Title:  Pie, An Old Brown Horse
Author:  Kandy Kay Scaramuzzo
Published:  November 8th 2012 by http://www.kandykayscaramuzzo.com
Page Count:   158
Genre:  Reality, from a horse's point of view
Shelf:  Review Copy
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

This is the story of a twenty five year old ranch horse that was injured and pretty much left to die. He was brought to a stable and sold, even though no one really expected him to survive. He was reborn into a merchant of hope. His amazing spirit and calmness have helped many people over the next 13 years as he became the most amazing mentor and therapy horse. This is Pie's story as he tells it about the most amazing second chance at life and his travels through it. You will meet his person, a shy young girl who he helps grow into adulthood. He will introduce you to the other horses and people that helped shape his journey. His influence has known no bounds throughout this last 13 years and he continues to shine his light even at the ripe old age of 38. This is a feel good story about life, love, second chances and giving back.

My Review:

With this novel Scaramuzzo takes a very unique (yet realistic) outlook on the horse-rider dynamic. She also illustrates the diversity and discrepancy in the equine industry. Above all, I commend Scaramuzzo on always using the correct equine and equestrian terminology throughout the novel. It really adds to the mystique of the story.

This is an extremely well written novel. It has a brilliant flow that you find yourself falling into. Everything is presented in light of the fact that she is helping Pie tell his story. Therefore, the story is written in a straightforward and matter of fact fashion that keeps you completely captivated.

The characters in this novel are all phenomenally well developed and easy to relate to. I can so picture my big brown, but not so old yet, ranch bred horse saying these things. The outlook that Pie presents on life is so realistic that you find yourself completely wrapped up in the story. The different equine reactions to things are spot on, and everyone who knows horses can relate. They characters are also quite well developed. You get to know everyone very well. You know where they came from and why they react how they do.

As a whole, this was a phenomenal read. This novel made me laugh so hard that I fell off my chair. Everything is so realistic yet off the wall that you can’t help but laugh at some of the situations that Scaramuzzo presents in this story. It also brought tears to my eyes at times, and made me full out laugh at others.

Interview with Kandy Scaramuzzo

Today I'd like to welcome Kandy Scaramuzzo, author of Pie, an Old Brown Horse, to Pure Jonel.
Let's learn some more about her.

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?

Sure, I am probably the one of the quirkiest individuals you will ever meet. I have many interests, mostly having to do with animals and behavior. I guess you could call me a professional rehabber. I spend my days trying to fix issues with animals and children, mostly adolescents.

I love my life and my job. I am very proud of being a seventh generation Texan, there are not many of us around, plus I have a brick at the Cowgirl Museum. I love my “cowgirl life style”. I spend many hours outside with my horses, of which I have six at the moment. Most of my horses are rescues as are my dogs, cats, and snakes.

I do love to read and the best present my husband ever gave me was my kindle. I had one of the first dinosaur models and I wore it out. I am on my second one. It goes everywhere with me.

Q ~ If you could go anywhere, real or imagined, where would it be and why?

Wow, tough question, but I thought about it and I think I would really like to go to Texas in 1880, just like the Pat Greene song. I think people were more real then and there were less social issues. I know it would be tough, but I think I would enjoy it. People were more appreciative of everything back then. If you didn’t have anything, you appreciated what you got a lot more. There are so many selfish people and takers these days. It gets a bit tiring. Many people have told me they thought I was born in the wrong time period or I’m from another planet. I will let you decide the answer to that one.

Q ~ If you could be any animal, which would you be and why?

Ooh, a wolf, for sure. They are so majestic and loyal. They are also so smart. If you study their pack culture, you will see that they have a social system that makes most people look a bit shallow.

Q ~ What’s one habit that you have that you’d like to break?

I have a real bad habit of hitting my head against a brick wall. I don’t know when to stop. I wish I could figure that one out. I have always thought I could fix everything and I get upset with myself when I cannot. When I am working on something, I throw everything I have into it. I am pretty much an all or nothing type person.

Q ~ Are there any new Authors that have grasped your interest recently and why?

That is easy. There is Su Williams with Dream Weaver and Patrick O’Scheen with Dreamer.

They are not new but some of my favorites are MCV Egan, Amelia Curzon, and JT Brown.

Q ~ What do you feel is your biggest accomplishment?

I would say my biggest accomplishment to date is raising an incredible daughter to adulthood that is working, contributing member of society. She is awesome and I would like to think I had a little bit to do with that.

Q ~ If you could have coffee (or tea) with any author who would it be and what would you ask them?

Edgar Allen Poe for sure, would be my choice for a drinking buddy. How did he come up with the idea for Murders of The Rue Morgue? What made him create his detective stories? Did his ideas just come to him or did he have inspirations for them?

Q ~ What is your favourite genre to read?

I am pretty all over the place for what I read. It is easier to say what I don’t read, that would be erotica and romance. Just don’t care for them. I just finished reading the 1720 diary of Lady Bathery. Before that I read a nice horse story, and before that an adventure story. Right now I am reading a thriller. I also read a bunch of kid’s books. My adolescents don’t like to read, so I am always trying to find them interesting things to read.

Q ~ When you write, do you lay out a solid outline before beginning, or start writing and iron out the kinks later?

I keep it in my head and play it in several different ways, and then I start writing and don’t stop until I’m done. It plays hector on a schedule. Then I iron out the kinks.

Q ~ When you write, do you try to reach a specific word count or simply write until you are done?

I just start writing and don’t stop. The other day I wrote a short fiction piece and was having trouble with the word count. I’m not used to counting words. I had that same problem with papers in school.

Q ~ What inspired you to write Pie?

Pie inspired me to write Pie. He is the most exceptional horse I have ever been around. He has done so much to influence so many people in such a positive manner; I felt it was wrong of me not to share him. I was lucky to be chosen as his guardian and scribe.

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about the novel?

I know it reads like a novel. It has been compared to Black Beauty. The reviewers are calling it Brown Beauty. One catch, it is a true story. It is just told from his point of view. He is a cocky old horse with an opinion about just about everything.

Just as a side note, he wrote the short fiction piece I was working on the other day. One book and he thinks he is Mark Twain.

Q ~ Are you working on any other novels? Do you have anything planned?

I have a few ideas rattling around in my head. I might have something out by the end of summer.

Q ~ What’s one piece of advice you would like to give those who’d like to start writing professionally?

If you want to write, do it. Don’t let anyone talk you out of it. You will run into a bunch of people who will tell you Indie authors are ruining the book field. You have to have a thick shell. If you need to write, write. Write for yourself, because it is something you love. If you love it, no one else should be able to talk you out of it.

There are a lot of good people who will support you also. Seek out other Indie writers. It is a very close knit supportive group of people.

Happy Trails To You!
