Synopsis from Goodreads:
Then her ownership is won by a barbarian from another country. With the uncertainty that comes from belonging to a new warlock, Serena questions if being tarnished is really worse than being owned by a barbarian, and tempts fate by breaking the rules. When he looks the other way instead of punishing her, she discovers a new world. The more she ventures into the forbidden, the more she learns of love and a freedom just out of reach. Serena longs for both. But in a society where women are only ever property, hoping for more could be deadly.
My Review:
Falor uses a variety of different writing and descriptive techniques to create a fully developed world. You are completely immersed in this world, living the hardships, sorrows, and moments of joy right along with the characters. Everything is very vivid and extremely approachable. Not only is the world that Falor creates captivating, but the story itself won’t let you go. Not only is it intriguing and loveable, but it is also downright disturbing at times. Falor takes the notions of suppression, oppression, and abuse to an entirely new level, bringing them to the forefront as the basis of her story. That said, she also battles against that, having characters rise above it in an attempt to invoke changes in a world where this is the norm.
Her very solid storyline is backed up by equally solidly developed characters. Falor’s characters are original and very interesting. By merging various different cultures and giving each character a voice of their own she creates an amazing cast that you want to know better. You get to know them quite well and root for some, while hoping that others get what they deserve. That is the most remarkable thing about this cast of characters. Although some characters are intrinsically good and others intrinsically evil, the bulk of these characters are normal individuals who ride the status quo. It allows the good and evil to stand out more.
As a whole, this was a very intriguing, disturbing, and intrinsically captivating novel. It was a brilliant first out for Falor.
