With no man to call master, the Scorpions could flee the danger and intrigue. But Kendras cannot abandon the man he once loved—or the man he’s growing to love—without first uncovering the real threat to the Empire.

My Review:

I was drawn to this story right from the very first page. Voinov sets his scene in a magical and eloquent manner. You don’t simply picture it, but rather, are transported there. I enjoyed the adventure of this story. The journey was breathtaking. The intrigue kept me on my toes. I found myself trying to unravel the story as Voinov was telling it. It was a fantastic experience.

Getting to know the various different players in the story was absolutely amazing. The dynamics and intrigue between them kept me on my toes. I loved getting to know everyone`s secrets & trying to figure out who knew what about whom, while also feeling the camaraderie between brothers at arms. The mysterious aura behind some of the characters had me so jumpy that I nearly flew off the couch at times. Neither I, nor the rest of the characters, could guess what he was up to. On top of all that, these characters were quite well developed. I enjoyed the multifaceted portrayal of the major players in the tale. The naturalness of their dialogue along with the eloquence of the speeches really draws you to the individuals who are at the forefront of this tale.

This was an eloquently put together novel. Voinov kept me captivated and on my toes throughout. I`d recommend this story to those who enjoy action, adventure, and court intrigue.

If she doesn't betray him first

Ravenna soon discovers that the only real threat Sutherland poses is to her heart. But will the proud Highland laird ever forgive her when he discovers the woman he loves in an English spy?

My Review:

What a bewitching novel! Court intrigue melds with romance in an unforgettable manner. Roberts’ descriptions make this story come to life in a vivid way. You can’t help but picture the amazing scenery surrounding the characters. She transports you back in time, where you fall in love with her story, her characters, and the land. The novel itself was well thought out & edited. The storyline was fascinating. Roberts had me on edge throughout.

I quite enjoyed the cast of characters in this novel. The preconceptions held by the main characters added to the drama of the tale, while also adding some comedy to their interactions. The intensely personal conversations between the main characters really allows you to get to know them. The supporting cast was just as approachable. I found myself quite enamoured with many of these individuals. The way that Roberts’ developed their backgrounds as well as their thoughts and feelings on certain events made them all the more real

This well written story full of court intrigue, adventure, and romance was next to impossible to put down. I would recommend it to those looking for a healthy dose of highland romance.

My Review:

Buchman develops this story in striking clarity. At times I felt like I was in a war zone myself. I loved how Buchman got technical without it dragging the story down. I found it to be a very gripping read, as well as a refreshing change from so many authors who simply allude to events rather than developing them. The colourful descriptions in this novel allow you to see what the characters were seeing. The shift between day and night, US and foreign added a dramatic counterpoint.

The cast of characters in this novel were perfectly suited to the story at hand. I appreciate how everyone was more than simply their commission. Buchman works their everyday lives in with the events that they faced, showing how they balance. The main characters were exceptionally well and naturally developed. All aspects of their lives were developed, not simply those directly related to the story. And I love the way the main character thinks. By simply thinking, ‘Gods she was stupid,’ she opens herself up to an entirely new set of beliefs and principles that I found quite easy to relate to.

As a whole, this suspenseful & vivid story kept me captivated throughout. The balance of romance with the rest of the ‘real world’ story made it something that I’ll never forget.

Desperate Hearts by Rosanne Bittner

Published:  September 2nd 2014 by Sourcebooks Casablanca
Length:  352pgs
Format:  Netgalley ecopy
Genre:  Historical Romance

Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

She's a woman with a secret

Elizabeth Wainwright is on the run. Accused of a murder she didn't commit, she has no choice but to cut ties with her old life and flee West. The last thing she wants is attention, but when her stagecoach is attacked, she suddenly finds herself under the fierce protection of one of Montana's famed vigilantes . . . whether she likes it or not.

He's a man with a code

Lawman Mitch Brady is sworn to uphold justice in the wild lands of 1860s Montana. He's never met a man he's feared, and he's never met a woman more desperately in need of his help. Something's shaken the secretive Elizabeth, but as he gets to know the beautiful city belle, he finds the only thing he wants more than her safety . . . is her trust.

My Review:

Welcome to the Wild West at its finest!

This story is bittersweet. It’s also revealing and heartening. Bittner captivates her audience with both the best and the worst of human nature. Her vivid yet realistic descriptions place the reader right in the middle of the action. You don’t just visualise this story, you live it. I found myself transported back in time, living vicariously through the pages of this novel.

The characters in this tale were completely breathtaking. They were so real that it made it easy to fathom the experiences that they lived. I also appreciated the fact that they rose above what they lived through. That said, although their histories were definitely harsh and daunting, they weren’t completely out of the realm of possible. In fact, they are still things that occur too often today. Bittner allows the characters’ emotions to shine through the pages of this novel, thus giving her readers an opportunity to connect with them. I found myself drawn in to their lives and definitely didn’t want to let them go at the end.

Overall, I was completely enthralled throughout. Bittner takes western historical romance to an entirely new level with this story. It may have been my first of her novels but it definitely won’t be my last.

The Maiden of Ireland by Susan Wiggs

Title:  The Maiden of Ireland
Author:  Susan Wiggs
Published:  August 26/14 by Mira Books
Length:  448pgs
Format:  ecopy
Genre:  historical romance
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:
★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Susan Wiggs sweeps readers away to the misty coast of Ireland in an irresistible tale of falling in love with the enemy...

John Wesley Hawkins was condemned to hang, accused of treason and heresy. As he's transported to the scaffold at Tyburn, however, the Lord Protector steps in and offers him the hand of mercy--if Wesley agrees to travel to Ireland on a dangerous mission into the heart of the Irish resistance against English rule. He'll have to seduce the rebels' secrets from a headstrong Irishwoman, but that shouldn't be a problem for a man of Wesley's reputation....

Caitlin MacBride is mistress of the beleaguered Irish castle Clonmuir, and she makes no secret of her loyalty to her countrymen. She's determined to remain strong for her people, but a wish for true love one evening at sunset yields the one thing that may sway her resolve. When Wesley walks out of the mist that fateful night, Caitlin's faith in the magic of Ireland is briefly restored--until she discovers he's one of the treacherous Englishmen she has spent her life fighting against.

My Review:

This novel is simply poetic. Wiggs has a way with words that will wow you. This novel was a heartfelt journey back in time that has a mythical, enchanting feel to it. The way that the author alludes to things rather than stating them outright makes it all the more magical. At the same time it is one of those stories where you can’t even begin to guess the ending. Each new twist and turn takes you further from the ending you would expect until you’re avidly swallowing each word on the page, racing towards the conclusion. Wiggs’ graphic descriptions make this story vividly real. She combines all of this together to create an exciting and enduring story.

Wiggs’s tale is backed up by some fantastic characters. Parts of this novel give you compassion for these characters as you couldn’t fathom living through what they did. Others make you envious because they experienced the things that dreams are made of.

This novel is a work of art. It is one of those novels that is perfect for any and all who enjoy historical romances.

Double Up by Vanessa North

Title:   Double Up
Author:  Vanessa North
Published:  Aug 25/14 by Riptide Publishing
Length:  139pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  m/m contemporary romance
Shelf:  review
Rating:
★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Knowing he’s loved can make any man fly.

Fifteen years ago, Ben Warren was a wakeboarding champion: king of big air, ballsy tricks, and boned grabs. Until a career-ending injury left him broken in ways he still has no hope of fixing. Now he takes his thrills where he can get them, and tries not to let life hurt too much.

Then Davis Fox arrives in Ben’s sporting goods store with a plan to get in touch with his estranged brother by competing in the annual wakeboarding double-up contest. The catch? He’s never ridden before. It’s crazy, but Ben’s a sucker for the guy’s sob story—and for his dimples, too—so he agrees to coach Davis.

Davis is everything Ben isn’t: successful, confident, and in love with life. And he wants Ben to love life—and him—too. But before Ben can embrace a future with Davis, he needs to remember how to hope.

My Review:

I absolutely love the way that this novel is written. North’s voice, tone, and style draw you completely in to the story. For a non-boarder like myself North approaches the topic perfectly. She gives me enough information that I can understand what’s going on, without it overshadowing the story at hand. It’s an exciting story that tackles life at its best and families at its worst.

The characters in this novel are perfectly priceless. Everyone is true to who they are, yet also understand how they are perceived by others. Getting to know them in this intimate and adventurous manner allows you to become part of their lives, and them part of yours. I appreciate how real they are, and how they’re dealing with real life issues, even if their lives seem perfect on the surface.

Overall, this was a brilliant novel that I couldn’t put down for a second. I’ll be rereading this (multiple times) in the future & would recommend it to others. This may have been my introduction to this author’s work, but I’ll definitely be looking for more in the future.

Published:  Aug 14/14 by Six Talon Sign Fantasy & Futuristic Romance

Genre:  Urban Fantasy
Shelf:  review
Rating:
★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Daisy Reynolds might be taller and more athletic than the average seventeen-year-old, but she doesn’t make waves. Hiding from her klepto mom’s terrifying Shifter ex-boss makes an invisible life necessary. But when a Burner—a chaos ghoul—gets a whiff of Daisy, hiding turns into running for her life.

Daisy soon realizes the conflicts around her run deeper than nasty ghouls and mean Shifters looking to beat up her mom. Future-seeing Fates want a piece of her, too.
But some fates cannot be escaped unless you have courage… and an unlikely ally.

Bonds, Episode One of The Silence Cycle, introduces Daisy Reynolds Pavlovich, an important new character to the Fate - Fire - Shifter - Dragon universe. Join Daisy as she navigates a landscape punctuated by unfamiliar creatures:

Fates with the ability to see past, present, and future.
Ghouls called Burners who devour with fire and acid.
Shifters who shape much more than their bodies.
And two dragons who speak with color and pattern.

My Review:

Radcliffe paints her scenes in tones and hues. You feel like you’re looking at an oil painting. Everything pops with a vivid sense of reality that draws you to it. By writing in short, poignant sentences Radcliffe adds an extra sense of urgency to an already suspenseful tale. Not only is this a fantastically magical story, this novel is also an in-your-face social commentary that really makes you stop and think. I appreciate the fact that this novella is complementary to the Activation trilogy of the series, while also standing alone. I found myself getting excited over each and every new detail revealed.

I really enjoyed getting to know Daisy so much better in this instalment. Her past, and the convergence of everyone’s path leads to a great story. Radcliffe’s development of her characters in this novella is spot on. She gives you a peek into many histories while developing certain characters in the present. It combines into a heady mix that will make you feel part of this world. You also come away with a much more intense understanding of the Fates & how they work. It was quite enlightening.

As a whole this was a brilliant segue into the Silence trilogy. Radcliffe melds reality and imagination together in a manner so seamless that you’ll find yourself walking through the pages alongside her characters. I couldn’t put it down for a second.

Genre:  urban fantasy
Shelf:  review
Rating:
★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

After Daisy Reynolds’s friend and protector vanishes into the desert, she realizes one option remains: Leave San Diego for Branson, Missouri, and ask for help at the bar favored by the dragons.

The Shifters at The Land of Milk and Honey hold the key to finding her missing father, but they also have the power to compel her to spill her secrets. When threatened with an enthralling, Daisy runs.

But bad people take advantage of the threatened and the vulnerable—and escaping a very bad person soon becomes Daisy’s only option for survival…

Warning: While not graphic, the situations depicted in Broken are at times difficult and brutal, and for adult readers only.

Watch for Silent, Episode Three of the Silence Cycle, available October, 2014.

My Review:

Radcliffe is a very visually descriptive author. The words that she pens become a vivid scene in your mind’s eye. Her writing is simultaneously eloquent and snarky. Radcliffe throws classic style out the window, telling her wildly creative story in her own way and keeping her readers completely captivated throughout. The way that she combines history with the present and a whole lot of her own imagination creates a riveting tale that you won’t be able to put down.

I love the sense of Daisy’s character that you get in this novella. By having Daisy tell her own story you not only get to see who she is today, but how she got to where she is. Getting up close and personal with Gavin was similarly revealing. I found myself really feeling a connection to these two. You also get an intriguing look at the dragons, getting to know them outside of the Activation series. The sneek peek at the Seraphim was also intriguingly cliffhanger-esque.

If I thought I was addicted to the world of Fate~Fire~Shifter~Dragon before reading this novella I was woefully wrong. Broken took it to an entirely new level. I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Adult-content rating: This book contains content considered unsuitable for young readers 17 and under, and which may be offensive to some readers of all ages.

My Review:

Dold actually broke my heart with this one. The events and emotions that wind their way through this story are not only captivating, but are also the type of events that one never wants to live, even if others do every day. Dold goes in depth as to what a shifter is and what he needs in this novel. You find out what it really means to be a wolf shifter as she adeptly makes this part of the storyline, always keeping with the fast forward pace of her well put together tale.
I love how Dold mixes crass & sass in with love and heartache the way you find them in real life. Her characters aren’t always prim and proper. They combine the world as we know it with that supernatural element that we all wish we had. Dold’s characters are a little off centre, but completely true to themselves and their loved ones. It’s great to see a romance without your stereotypical character types. The female lead is slightly older & larger than the typical author would present, making her someone the rest of us can relate to. And the family that stands behind them is a hodgepodge mix of different personalities and eras. They all come together in a close knit fashion that allows the reader to feel like they’re part of the story rather than simply a bystander.

I really enjoy the dialogue in this novel. Dold mixes modernity with times gone by in the ways that her characters speak. Their centuries of existence shine through, and you really get a feel for who they are simply based on how they talk (and think). This mixing of eras also shines through in the narrative. The inherent mixing that ensues allows the reader to really feel what the characters do, and experience life as they do.

As much as I enjoyed reading the first novel in this series, loved this one was even better. Dold is definitely an author to keep an eye on in the future.

Ten days on the road with the band for her to get an exclusive story. But Harper’s a homebody and the last thing she wants to do is go on the road with a rock band. And she definitely doesn’t want to spend ten days with the notorious bad boy and band front man, Nic Rayne.

When Nic proves to be too much for Harper to handle and she threatens to quit the assignment, Nic decides to sweeten the pot. If she stays with the tour for all ten days, he’ll pay off all of her student loan debt….but there’s one small catch.

Harper also has to sleep in his bed every night.

Excerpt:

Brooke and I are wearing those plastic backstage passes around our necks and when two really big body guards standing at the backstage entrance see them they let us pass right through the door.

As I glance around at all the other people with backstage passes I notice they all look a lot more like Brooke than I expected. All of the girls are wearing ultra-short, skin-tight skirts with barely there tops.

The guys all look like they just stepped out of the band themselves. They’re all young and hot and they seem to know it.

There’s definitely no shortage of arrogance in the room.

“I’m definitely going after Leo,” Brooke whispers to me as we approach the band.

All three of the band members are standing next to each other drinking beers and talking with a bevy of blondes.

Maybe this isn’t the best place for Brooke to be hanging out. She hasn’t been sober very long and I don’t want her to fall into temptation. I have a feeling if Leo handed her a beer she wouldn’t say no.

“I’m getting tired,” I say and fake a big yawn.

“You are not going to wimp out on me.” Brooke gives me a cold glare. “We’re not leaving here until we meet Always Rayne. All of them.”

Nic Rayne looks like he’s getting bored with the blondes. He’s glancing around the room rather than paying attention to what the girls are saying.

As soon as Nic’s eyes land on me I can see his expression change. His brows are furrowed and he looks puzzled. I’m sure he’s wondering what someone who looks like me is doing backstage.

Disappointment crosses over the faces of the two girls vying for Nic’s attention when he walks away from them and heads in my direction.

“You,” he points to me. At least I think he’s pointing at me. When I look around and realize I’m standing alone, I know he’s pointing at me.

Then I panic because I’m standing alone. Where the hell is my roommate? The one who dragged me here in the first place practically kicking and screaming. She completely abandoned me. I also notice that one of Nic Rayne’s bandmates seems to have vanished just as quickly.

It isn’t possible for Brooke to hook up with someone that fast, is it?

This is Brooke we’re talking about. Not only is it possible, it’s highly probable.

Nic Rayne is now glaring at me. It’s like he can’t believe I didn’t jump as soon as he pointed to me. I can already tell this guy is a piece of work. He’s probably used to getting any girl he wants with the snap of his finger. Hell, he’s probably used to getting anything he wants the second the demand comes out of this mouth.

I can see him let out an exasperated breath and then head in my direction. I quickly scan the room to see if I can spot an exit but by the time my eyes land on one, it’s too late. Nic Rayne has already entered my personal space.

And he’s not just close to me; he’s practically on top of me. And I don’t like it. He makes me extremely uncomfortable. I’d rather be anywhere than standing next to Nic Rayne. I’d rather be back in Economics class at the university and I hate Economics. It’s the only class I ever got a C in.

“What’s up?” Nic says.

I’ve seen him in movies so I knew he was tall and muscular. I guess it never occurred to me how tall and muscular he really is. The guy is towering over me and I’m not that short. I’m five feet six inches. Nic has got to be at least six inches taller than me.

“Did you see where my friend went?”

He nods but doesn’t say anything else.

“Okay. Would you mind telling me where she went?”

“With Leo.”

I assume he means Leo Donovan, his cousin and the guitar player in Always Rayne.

“Hey, Rayne.” Xander Donovan, Nic’s other cousin, and the band’s drummer, places a hand on Nic’s shoulder. “Pick the girl you want and let’s go. We’re all headed over to Troy.”

Troy is the trendiest club in the city. I’ve heard a lot about it but haven’t been able to afford the stiff cover charge and the fifteen dollar drinks.

“Come on,” Nic says and turns to leave as if I’m supposed to follow him.

He takes a few steps before he realizes that I’m not following him. Then he turns back around and gives me an odd look. “Aren’t you coming?”

I shake my head.

“Why not?” He actually looks puzzled.

“Do you want a list?”

His eyes narrow and then he walks back over to me. He gets so close I can smell his masculine scent and what’s left of his spicy cologne. “What’s the list?”

I gulp. I wasn’t actually expecting him to ask for the list. I thought he’d just get disgusted and find some other girl to go with him.

“Well, you’re not my type. I don’t find you remotely attractive. Or particularly interesting. I don’t like your music at all. And you don’t seem very smart. And I don’t sleep with guys I don’t know. So, maybe you should just find some other girl to take to Troy.”

He’s doing his best to bite back a grin. The smug asshole actually finds what I’ve said funny. I didn’t think I could dislike him more but he’s really pushing my buttons.

“I’m not your type, huh?” He leans in even closer. So close, I can feel his breath on my neck. “I’m everybody’s type.”

I try to swallow but I feel like there’s a golf ball stuck in my throat.

“You don’t find me attractive, huh? Then why are you sweating?” He places his hand right over my heart. “And your heart is beating a mile a minute. Maybe you should listen to what your body wants instead of what your brain is telling you.”

I take a step back and try to collect myself. I wipe my brow and realize I really am sweating. And he’s right, my heart is racing. What the hell is going on?

“I’m not some groupie who’s going to do whatever you want because you snapped your fingers.”

He looks me up and down. “I can see that.”

I place my hands on my hips. “What is that supposed to mean?”

He actually has the audacity to laugh. “No one would ever mistake you for a groupie that’s for sure.”

“Why do you say that?”

“Your clothes are like some crazy mash-up between a hippie and a school librarian.”

I glance down at my flowered skirt and strappy sandals. He has a point. I’m not exactly a fashion whore like my roommate. Not that I have the money to update my wardrobe even if I wanted to.

He steps closer again. He’s got a habit of getting right into my personal space and it makes me uncomfortable every time he does it. When I look into his deep brown eyes, I have the feeling that he’s doing it just to get a rise out of me.

“What are you doing here?” he asks. For the first time since we’ve met, he actually sounds sincere.

“I came with my roommate. She won tickets from the radio station. She wanted to see you. And your cousins.”

“I asked what you’re doing here.”

“I guess I’m here for moral support,” I stammer. And I have a press pass.”

I’m not sure why I tell him that. I guess I feel like I need some kind of excuse to be here because I’m definitely not here for the music.

“Why am I not surprised? You look like a writer. Or a librarian.”

I dig around in my purse and pull out my press pass. To my surprise, he grabs it from my hand. “Chatter. Never heard of it.”

“It’s an online magazine. A start up.”

He nods then hands me back my credentials.

“Do you like it?”

“Like what?” I’m surprised by the question.

“Writing. Working for a magazine.”

I shrug. “I’ve never thought about doing anything else. My parents named me Harper Leigh. I was kind of destined to be a writer.”

He’s looking at me with a blank stare. Maybe he really is as brainless as I think. And for some strange reason that disappoints me.

“Harper Leigh,” I repeat. “I spell my name differently but she was a writer.”

He’s still looking at me with a blank expression.

“She won the Pulitzer Prize.”

Then he smiles. “I know who Harper Lee is. To Kill a Mocking Bird. Won the Pulitzer Prize in 1961. She was also good friends with Truman Capote. She helped him with the research for In Cold Blood.”

I can feel my jaw drop.

“I guess I’m smarter than you think.” He leans in close again. “And I’m also a great actor apparently because I had you fooled.”

I want to say something in response but no words come out of my mouth.

“Rayne.” It’s Xander again. “Come on. We’ve got to bounce.”

“Does everyone call you Rayne?”

“Always.”

My Review:

This is a very light and fluffy story that definitely made me laugh more than once. Avalon entertains her readers with this larger than life story that would be a dream come true for many.

The main character’s tone and the way that she holds herself annoyed me right from the very first page. It made it rather difficult to like her, identify her, and therefore fully immerse myself in the story at hand. The author does, however, nail the frat sister stereotype to a ‘T’ with this cast. Combine that with your stereotypical rock god, and you have the characters that Avalon builds her story around. The characters do grow on me by the end, but it definitely took a while.

As a whole, this novel had a story that I wanted to love, but some characters that I just couldn’t get into. It was enjoyable as a fluff read, but rather directly geared at late high school, early university/college students.

Texas! Chase by Sandra Brown

Title:  Texas!  Chase
Series:  Texas! Tyler Family Saga #2
Author:  Sandra Brown
Published:  Jan 5/2010 by Random House Audio
Length:  304pgs
Format:   audio CD
Genre:  contemporary romance
Shelf:  borrowed
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

In the second book in #1 New York Times bestselling author Sandra Brown’s beloved Texas! trilogy, readers meet another son of the troubled Tyler clan—Chase Tyler, a man hardened by life and desperately trying to outrun the sorrows of his past.

Chase Tyler has been the object of Marcie Johns’s desire since grade school. But when it came time to settle down, the handsome, laconic cowboy chose another woman to be his bride. Life was good for Chase—until things took an abrupt and tragic turn. Ravaged by grief, Chase has become a lost and embittered soul, a man without purpose, compassion, or hope.

Then fate intercedes, reuniting Chase and Marcie, who was an unwitting player in Chase’s unfathomable family tragedy. Guilt weighs heavily on Marcie, but she’s also convinced that only the strength of her love can pull Chase back from the abyss. She’s willing to risk everything on a daring plan to rescue his business, save his life, and bring them together at last.

My Review:

What an emotional story. Brown had my heart in my throat throughout. Her character and scene development places you not only in this story, but in the centre of this family. Each event draws you further and further in. I appreciated how the prologue set the scene, giving you a glimpse into what had happened without dwelling on it. Brown’s eloquent descriptions meld with her fantastic storytelling to create a romance that will really make you believe.

This is definitely a character driven tale. Every event is directly correlated to someone, and their reactions are what drive the story forward. His refusal to move forward combined with her refusal to give up leads them on a journey that kept me on my toes.

The narrator really made this novel for me. As much as I enjoyed the story itself, it was really one of those ‘can’t put it down’ novels, the narrator’s intonation and snark made it unforgettable.

As a whole this was a very enjoyable read. It can easily be read as a standalone or as part of the series. I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to others, nor can I wait to read the next in the series.

Torn between impossible loyalties, she must serve her queen... though it may cost her heart.

Can love between mortal and fey ever have a happy ending?

My Review:

Sharp draws you back into the magical world of Feyland from the very first sentence. Adventure & excitement abound in a fantasy world like no other. Sharp melds the human world with that of the Seeilie & Unseelie courts in a manner that allows you to see them coexisting naturally in our world. The implications of this make the story all the more exciting. Throw in the well plotted out adventures and quests that he characters find themselves on and you have one unforgettable tale. She also defines what needs defining without slowing down the fast forward pace of the story. Sharp allows her readers full immersion into this intricate world while taking them on the ride of a lifetime.

I feel like I really know each of the main characters in this novel intimately. I especially loved the growth that we see in Roy in this novel. He is still the spoiled rich kid that we`ve come to know and tolerate, but he`s really coming into his own now. You can see the personal growth that he`s undergone throughout the series, and now he`s becoming a much more rounded and grounded individual. He`s someone you can (almost) like now.

This was a beautifully put together novel that I wouldn`t hesitate to recommend to fantasy lovers of all ages. The world that Sharp presents to her readers is breathtakingly beautiful and extremely easy to fall in love with. I definitely couldn`t put this one down even for a second.

Sworn to Defiance by Terah Edun

Title:  Sworn to Defiance
Series:  Courtlight #5
Author:  Terah Edun
Published:  April 28/14
Length:  249pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  YA fantasy romance
Shelf:  review
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

Ciardis Weathervane returned to the imperial court of Sandrin to unite her foes. But her efforts hit a stumbling block. The imperial kind. She never thought that before rallying an empire, she'd have to fight the emperor himself.

An imposter sits the throne and the court she turned to for help is in turmoil. Ciardis hasn't survived assassination attempts, torture and really bad luck to be taken down by her own ruler. So she devises a plan. But first she needs to get Sebastian and Thanar to agree. Each seems to love her in their own way. But neither is listening to her. Pushing them to put aside their differences, in an effort to ward off catastrophe, might be harder than displacing an emperor who would do anything to keep his throne.

Butting heads at court isn’t Ciardis’s only problem. With the princess heir’s threat looming she is forced to travel to the mythical city of Kifar, where it is up to her small group to stop the destruction of the entire city while heading a rebellion that could foment a revolution. It wouldn't be the first revolution that Algardis has ever known. But with Ciardis Weathervane at its head—it would certainly be the last.

This fifth novel continues the story of Ciardis Weathervane from Sworn To Secrecy.

My Review:

This novel is intensely adventurous from the very first sentence. Action and adventure abound, keeping you completely immersed in the original storyline. The past and present collide in a thrillingly suspenseful manner. Intrigue abounds and allies are in short supply. You also get an in-depth look at various forms of magic in this novel. Edun demonstrates & narrates in a manner that keeps you captivated while still learning more about this remarkable world. This plays directly into the court intrigue & deception that will keep you on your toes.

The personal growth in the main characters is remarkable in this novel. They’re really coming into their own. You can no longer see them as children or headstrong youth. They are becoming a force to be reckoned with. I appreciate the fact that Edun’s characters don’t grow stagnant. You continue to learn new tidbits about all of the major players in the story throughout.

This novel was well and eloquently written. It was captivating for readers of all ages. I definitely couldn’t put it down for a second, nor can I wait for the next instalment in the series.

The Marriage Pact by Linda Lael Miller

Title:  The Marriage Pact
Series:  Bliss County Brides #1
Author:  Linda Lael Miller
Published:  May 27/14 by Harlequin HQN
Length:  384pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  contemporary romance
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:
★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

The women of Bliss County are ready to meet the men of their dreams! See how it all begins in this enthralling new series by #1 New York Times bestselling author Linda Lael Miller...

Ten years ago, Hadleigh Stevens was eighteen and this close to saying "I do," when Tripp Galloway interrupted her walk down the aisle. Now that she's recovered from her youthful mistake and Tripp's interference, Hadleigh and her single friends form a marriage pact. She doesn't expect Tripp to meddle with her new plan to find Mr. Right—or to discover that she's more attracted to him than ever!

Divorced and eager to reconnect with his cowboy roots, Tripp returns to Bliss County to save his ailing father's ranch. He's not looking for another wife—certainly not his best friend's little sister. But he's never been able to forget Hadleigh. And this time, if she ends up in his arms, he won't be walking away!

My Review:

Miller does an excellent job of introducing her readers to Bliss County. You really get a sense & feel for the town and surrounding area. Miller’s calm, quiet, yet captivating writing style melds with the community that she develops. You can easily picture this small town community and the surrounding ranch-land. Personally, one thing that would have added something to this novel would have been an explanation of what this marriage pact was. Miller tells you who is involved & alludes to it, but never once tells the reader exactly what the pact encompasses.

This is a very character driven novel. The main characters, their pasts, and their preconceptions shape the storyline like no other. The entire cast of this novel is very well put together. Readers get a sense of who’s who in Bliss County while really getting to know the main characters. A sense of family and community shines through the entire novel, making you feel right at home.

As a whole, this was a great novel and a brilliant introduction to Miller’s new series. I can’t wait to read more.

More Than A Cowboy by Cathy McDavid

Title:  More Than A Cowboy
Series:  Reckless, Arizona #1
Author:  Cathy McDavid
Published:  July 1/14 by Harlequin
Length:  224pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  contemporary romance
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

LOVE OR FAMILY LOYALTY?

Liberty Beckett was so used to watching longtime crush Deacon McCrea ride at her family's Reckless, Arizona, arena, she nearly forgot the handsome cowboy was an attorney. But it won't be hard to remember now that Deacon is representing her father in the legal battle dividing the Beckett clan and threatening the Easy Money Rodeo Arena.

This case is Deacon's chance to clear his name in Reckless. He didn't anticipate the powerful effect Liberty would have on him. Their attraction is undeniable…and a huge conflict of interest. To save his career and Liberty's relationship with her family, Deacon knows he needs to avoid Liberty. But what a man needs and what he wants are two very different things….

My Review:

McDavid’s in-depth development of the setting really draws you in. I could picture the rodeo arena. I could smell the bulls & broncs. Also, getting to know the town history really made me feel like part of the community, rather than just a bystander. I appreciated the accuracy in the equine and rodeo aspect of the story. McDavid defined some of the less common events, and made sure that all information given was accurate. She melded these truths into her complex and wildly unique story that kept me captivated throughout.

McDavid’s intricate character development leaves you with a sense that everyone is the victim, yet everyone is the bad guy. The complex relationships between the characters, both business and personal, really make you consider all aspects of the situations at hand. The relationship between the main characters is a rollercoaster that in turn made me laugh, cringe, & want to sit them in a room alone together so they have to talk. Their relationships with the family made things that much more interesting.

As a whole, this was a fantastic read that has me hooked on this new to me author. I can’t wait to return to Reckless with her.

Soul Defenders: Jaden by Carol Van Atta

Title:  Soul Defenders:  Jaden
Series:  Soul Defenders #2
Author:  Carol Van Atta
Published:  June 25/14 by Carol Van Atta
Length:  254pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  paranormal
Shelf:  review
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

With the Black Orchid’s expelled from Cherry Creek, peace has been restored…but will it last?

That is the question on everyone’s mind when a mutilated horse shows up alongside a voodoo alter at the new Henderson Academy. The academy, an alternative high school constructed over the cult’s former underground compound, signifies a fresh start for the town and the troubled students accepted into its life-changing program.

Thrust into another spiritual battle, Ted and Karen Lyons travel to Haiti for their honeymoon and mission trip, leaving behind Pastor Jimmy and the Howard women to solve the school’s mysterious occurrences, never suspecting a diabolical connection between the distant locations, the Haitian Voodoo community, and two single-minded superpowers.

From a rural community in Oregon, to the convicts in Cell Block E, across the miles to Haiti’s Voodoo infested mountains, a new reign of evil has emerged, an evil that leaves Haitian children more traumatized than the earthquake of 2010. Their lives destroyed by the power of Jaden.

Will a handful of struggling believers find a way to thwart a worldwide crisis? Or will they succumb to their own fears, mistakes, and unbelief? If the demons in charge have their way, destruction is imminent for Cherry Creek’s waning warriors and the world’s human inhabitants.

This fast-paced tale of supernatural suspense will thrill fans of Frank Peretti's This Present Darkness and Randy Alcorn's Ford Foulgrin’s Letters.

Author’s Note: This is the second installment in the Soul Defender’s series. It can be read as a standalone, but you will gain added insight by reading book one first.

My Review:

This was a very gripping story. Van Atta draws from the previous story in the series and continues on a very exciting adventure. The beginning of the novel is a bit slow as she fills her readers in on all the new developments and introduces the new characters, but then it is off and running. I really appreciated the ‘larger than life’ quality to the tale. It really gives a feel that the story is larger than simply the characters on the page. There is more at stake than simply what meets the eye.

The religious notes & symbolism were very well done in this novel. Van Atta brings them to the forefront without actually preaching at her audience. Religion is part of who the characters are, it is a fact of the story not a lesson to be learned.

The variety of characters in this novel really draws you in. There is definitely a sense of dark vs. light in the characters, but it is the fields of grey that draw you to the characters. The fact that the bulk of the characters cannot be painted fully on either side of the fence allows the readers to identify with them. The fact that a large portion of the cast is important to the storyline was also very welcome. There are very few characters that do not play a major role in the story while they are present.

Overall, this was a very welcoming, approachable read. The smooth flow & easy dialogue make this a quick & enjoyable novel.

The Promise by Robyn Carr

Title:  The Promise
Series:  Thunder Point #5
Author:  Robyn Carr
Published:  June 24/14 by Harlequin MIRA
Length:  363pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  contemporary romance
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:  ★★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

#1 New York Times bestselling author Robyn Carr returns to Thunder Point with an uplifting story about overcoming loss and finding unexpected love.

Scott Grant has a bustling family practice in the small Oregon community of Thunder Point. The town and its people have embraced the widowed doctor and father of two, his children are thriving, and Scott knows it's time to move on from his loss. But as the town's only doctor, the dating scene is awkward. That is, until a stunning physician's assistant applies for a job at his clinic.

Peyton Lacoumette considers herself entirely out of the dating scene. She's already been burned by a man with kids, and she's come to Thunder Point determined not to repeat past mistakes. When Scott offers her a job, at a much lower salary than she's used to, Peyton is surprisingly eager to accept…at least for now. She's willing to stay for a three-month trial period while she explores other options.

Scott and Peyton know the arrangement is temporary—it isn't enough time to build a real relationship, never mind anything with lasting commitment. But love can blossom faster than you think when the timing is right, and this short visit just might hold the promise of forever.

My Review:

The romance in this novel is intricate and breathtaking, yet still tasteful. Carr leaves so much to the imagination while painting a vivid picture for you. You can easily picture the beauty of the coast. Although Carr definitely tells a riveting story that you won’t be able to forget, there is also a calming quality about it. You’re immersed in the slower, friendlier pace of life in Thunder Point. It was very refreshing.

Carr approaches this novel in a very unique way. If you’re returning to the series, you feel like you’re being welcomed back. Everyone is as warm and inviting as they were on your last visit. Those who are just beginning to read it with this novel feel like the newcomer to a small town. You get introduced to the town and everyone in it in a very low-key manner, allowing you to absorb this coastal town.

I found it impossible not to imagine myself in the main character’s place. I couldn’t even fathom how I would handle it. I had to give her cudos for not only walking away, but for coming back strong afterwards. The male lead is completely flawed but absolutely perfect. He’s so genuine that you can’t help but fall for him. I also enjoyed how feeling came into play for these characters. Their relationship wasn’t all lust & whirlwinds. You really found out their hopes, dreams, and fears. They approached things with their heads & their hearts. It made for a very balanced story. I always find myself intrigued with Carr’s character names. They’re never mainstream, making you really stop to look at the character. At the same time, they aren’t so unique that you have a hard time remembering (or worse yet, pronouncing) them.

As a whole this was an absolutely breathtaking novel that I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend to anyone, whether you’ve read Robyn Carr’s work before or not. In fact, I urge you to go buy a copy today. This is definitely one that I’ll be rereading multiple times.

Lone Wolf Standing by Carla Cassidy

Title:  Lone Wolf Standing
Series:  Men of Wolf Creek #3
Author:  Carla Cassidy
Published:  July 1/14 by Harlequin
Length:  288pgs
Format:   ecopy
Genre:  romantic suspense
Shelf:  netgalley
Rating:  ★★★★

Synopsis from Goodreads:

New York Times bestselling author Carla Cassidy brings her riveting Men of Wolf Creek series to a thrilling climax.

Maybe it's just her imagination, but Sheri Marcoli's convinced she's being watched. With the disappearance of her aunt still unsolved, Detective Jimmy Carmani's not taking any chances. But sticking close to the vulnerable beauty isn't just a job. For the first time in his life, Jimmy's discovering feelings he thought himself incapable of.

But the powerful attraction Sheri feels toward Jimmy is scaring her almost as much as her stalker. The swarthy, dark-eyed detective is nothing like the golden-haired prince she's waited for all her life. But as Sheri struggles to resist her overpowering desire, an evil madman is closing in on both of them.

My Review:

Cassidy purveys a sense of darkness throughout this novel. I felt as if I was deep in a thick rainforest where the sun couldn’t quite shine through. There was also a very ‘Snow White’/Disney feel to the story. Together they combined in a rather intriguing manner to create a romantic suspense that kept me guessing. The ‘who-done-it’ aspect of the novel was very well done. I definitely couldn’t guess who it was until it was revealed at the ending.

Not only is there a large variety of character personalities in this novel, but it is also a multi-cultural cast that keeps you on your toes. The main characters were quite comical when interacting with each other. The female lead had a preconception of what her ‘prince’ should be, which is exactly the opposite of what one finds in the male lead. At the same time, the sexual tension between the two was palpable. The dialogue in the story was also very well done. It was so real & natural that you felt like you were sitting in on a real conversation.

As a whole, this was an enjoyable story. I did find it hard to stay fully immersed in the storyline at times, however I always came back to it.

Darkness Follows by Emerald O'Brien & author guest post

Before we get started today I'm going to hand you all over to Emerald O'Brien for a few minutes. for her take on NA mysteries.

When I finished writing my first mystery novel, I realized it was different from most mysteries I'd read. My main characters were in their twenties, and the majority were beginning their careers. I had heard about the new adult (NA) genre, and decided my debut novel, Darkness Follows, fit into that category. It follows two sisters, and their search for the truth, when they discover someone close has involved them in a murder investigation. I've found a few other NA mysteries, and to be honest, I'm really excited about the possibilities this pairing can offer.

What I Love About New Adult Mysteries

1. Variation. Easily, one of my favorite things about the mystery genre is that it offers variation with subgenres. Hard-boiled police procedural; cozy; female sleuth. The list goes on. I'd like to think that new adult (NA) is a new subgenre in the mystery category. I believe this fills a void I noticed when reading other mysteries, and represents an age group that is not often featured in the mystery genre.

2. The Rookie gets a chance to prove themselves. I love rooting for the sleuth, detective, investigator, cop, etc. We, as readers, put ourselves in the detectives shoes, and pull for them to catch the bad guy. In my NA mystery, Darkness Follows, the sleuth, inspector and cop are all in their twenties. This makes the inspector and cop relatively new to their careers, and although they don't have much experience, they are driven to earn their place in their new position. They also offer a more fresh, and less jaded perspective than those who have more experience and time with their careers.

3. The new adult reader gets to relate to the characters, the positions they are in, and the choices they make. As a fan of mysteries in general, it's not often that I find a protagonist I can relate to. Whether it be the age or career of the sleuth, or the family or ex-wife of the detective, it's not often I read about a character that hasn't had much life experience. For readers who are within this age group, and those who are older, it's easy to relate to a character who is just starting out in life. NA characters are making educational, or career decisions, and navigating through their first serious relationships. Characters in this age group are gaining life experience out on their own, and when you add a mystery to be solved, the perspective is likely to be different.

4. More to explore. From sleuths to detectives, the life of a new adult brings new challenges and opportunities to mystery genre. They might make more mistakes based on their inexperience, or learn from someone wiser. Many characters in this genre have not started families of their own, and are therefore more invested in themselves. Some characters may be distracted by shifting priorities in their lives.

5. Breaking NA stereotypes and misconceptions. The genre is relatively new (created within the last five years), and readers expectations are still somewhat flexible. Some believe that with NA comes more mature themes, including smut (sexually explicit writing style). Others believe a NA book has broken and angsty characters. Many disagree about the age group and issues the genre covers. Each NA book is bound to be different, but mysteries can help to expand the genre, and challenge some of the assumptions that come with it.

6. Broadening the mystery audience. I love mysteries and all the subgenres. I want to share that passion with everyone, and I believe NA mysteries will introduce new readers to a genre that incorporates so many things the NA audience is interested in. The many themes explored in the NA genre (such as identity, romance, relationships, independence, and the beginning of adulthood in general), offer a whole new take on mysteries. Whether the reader is a new adult, or were once one, I think it's exciting to explore the genre through a new adult's perspective.

Synopsis from Goodreads:

What if the hiding spot you escape to becomes more dangerous than the place you ran from?

Aurina Patrick is an ambitious young woman, whose only mistake was letting someone get too close. The day she is brought into the police department for questioning, her life changes forever. When Aurina discovers that someone she trusts has involved her in a series of murder investigations, her sister Ryanne joins her in a search for the truth. As the situation unravels, the Patrick sisters realize their lives could be in jeopardy.

When the sisters are taken to a remote location, the struggle for safety truly begins.

My Review:

This novel is simultaneously fun and suspenseful. The plot twists keep you on your toes but O’Brien’s writing style draws you in. I found myself racing through the novel wanting to know what would happen next and how it all would end. I also really appreciate the Canadian content in the story. It’s nice to see an author writing suspense about the world north of the border. Everything combined into one quick, easy read that kept me captivated.

The characters in this novel are quite unique. They are definitely real, and down to earth yet O’Brien develops them in such a manner that you get an up close and personal look at them. I found the dialogue in this novel to be smooth and easy to follow. It flowed naturally, lending an essence of humanity to the characters.

As a whole, this was a brilliant debut novel from a Canadian author I hope to be seeing more of in the future.
