My Review:

The odd name for this novel is very revealing. The entire novel is a little off centre. It definitely wasn’t what I was expecting based on the blurb. Brookes developed a varied story over a large area, continents to be exact. Her descriptions allow you to picture the scenes without taking away your ability to use your imagination. That said, I was expecting this story to be rather witty and quite comical. It did have its comedic moments, but didn’t quite live up to that.

The characters in this novel were definitely individuals, and developed as such. The fact that none of the characters were perfect made them much more real. Brooks spends a great deal of time developing the characters and their histories. It puts a lag on the storyline itself but allows you to get to know the characters quite well.

As a whole, this was an intriguing and well written novel, but just a little hard to get into.

About the author:

Elle grew up in Los Angeles, California, but has lived in San Francisco and then Jamaica when she was a Peace Corps Volunteer. At the age of twelve she became obsessed with keeping falcons in the back yard. Fortunately, for the hundreds of hapless French poodles living in the San Fernando Valley at the time, she was not allowed to do this. In the course of the following years, she took on the challenges of earlier times, learning how to fence, how to ride horses, archery skills, and she even took a "Grand Tour of Europe". Travel continues to be a passion of hers. Her father always claimed that she had been born into the wrong century. He may have been right. Elle currently lives in the central highlands of Costa Rica with her dog Pixie, and her hedgehog, Quiller.
