Blending paranormal and historical fiction by Jillian David

Jonel, thank you for having me on your awesome blog. The topic for today is: blending paranormal romance into historical fiction.

I love everything paranormal. The stranger, the better, I say -- but better make it believable. My first series, Hell to Pay, whose 3rd and final book, Flame Unleashed, came out this September, is all about paranormal romance blended into a realistic setting. Man, that series was fun to write! It had kick-ass heroines, imperfect alphas, unpleasant secret powers, psychic connections, molten lava, an eternal curse and Satan.

So, yeah, I love paranormal stuff.

But my second love when it comes to writing and reading is history. So much do I love history, that I injected significant past histories into the Hell to Pay series. I couldn’t help myself, and adding in snippets of past events brought several key characters to life.

What readers don’t know is the depth of research I did prior to writing this book. What you see on the page about each character only scratches the surface of what I researched to develop each character’s back-story.

Let’s return to the main topic at hand. Why is paranormal historical fiction so awesome? Because the possibilities are literally endless. Pick a time period, any time period. You have so many choices! Now, pair that time period with a religion, a folklore from that time, a fairy tale, or a supernatural power of any sort. Boom! History and paranormal joined together in a beautiful combination.

Revolutionary War + clairvoyance.

Ancient Rome + mind control.

World War I + fire starting ability.

We could play this game all day long and never create the same scenario.

While continuing to work on contemporary paranormal romance books, I have also been slowly creating a new world for a historical paranormal series. I’ve had so much fun researching old documents and finding obscure mentions of “odd behaviour” and “strange sight”.

Then, I’ve linked together Welsh and British medieval families. Let’s just say, the family trees branch, accumulate interesting family members, and then come back together in remarkable ways. And in my mysterious world, when family trees collide, powers grow and morph. What will happen when the lives of warring families filled with strange gifts and links to nobility collide?

Stay tuned! Paranormal historical romance is on the horizon for a new writing adventure, and I hope readers will want to come along for the ride!

About the author:

Jillian David lives near the end of the Earth with her nut of a husband and two bossy cats. To escape the sometimes-stressful world of the rural physician, she writes while on call and in her free time. She enjoys taking realistic settings and adding a twist of “what if.” Running or hiking on local trails often promotes plot development.

About Flame Unleashed:

When Civil War nurse Ruth Blackstone sacrificed her soul to save her husband’s life, he utterly betrayed her trust. Now, 150 years later, she’s still stuck killing depraved souls to feed her devil of a boss, Jerahmeel. She’s never been one for hair-brained schemes or sweet-talking flirts. That is, until she meets Cajun rogue Odie Pierre-Noir.

Odie has the research and the war plan to overthrow Jerahmeel and win freedom for all Indebteds. There’s just one hitch: he needs Ruth to act as bait. With charm on his side, he shows Ruth an intense passion she’s never experienced before.

Now Ruth must make the hardest decision of her long, damned life: continue in relative safety as an Indebted with Odie as her lover, or risk their eternal souls for one chance to break the curse. Will she choose the lesser evil?
