In this final installment, Gertie, Jeno, and Hector struggle to bring a peaceful resolution to the war in Athens, but any success they make comes at great cost. How many more people must die for freedom and justice? The teens quickly learn that nothing is fair in love and war. Sometimes even love requires a terrible price.

My Review:

This fast paced, action intensive story was a great conclusion to Pohler’s Vampires of Athens trilogy. I love the mix of vampires and Greek mythology. Pohler’s unique twist on both, bringing them together in such a unique manner creates a fantastic backdrop for the world that she’s created. I thoroughly enjoyed the different looks at the Greek Pantheon, the way that she keeps true to the Greek myths, while also giving them a twist. The message of accepting our differences, whatever they may be, was quite poignant.

Pohler’s world and character building continue throughout this novel, without regurgitating what we’ve learned in previous novels. I love how her larger than life descriptions continue to build the unique pockets of the world that her characters inhabit while also depending on the true geography of our planet. The characters also continue to grow with their adventures. I love how they stay who they are yet their understanding of the world around them and of the individuals around them grows by leaps and bounds. Gertie’s need to stand up for what’s right, regardless of the personal consequences was fantastic. The original songs in the novel also add to the story. Not only do the lyrics give you a peek into who Hector is on the inside, but they also set the tone for certain scenes.

Pohler has definitely created a YA novel (and series) that will be loved by readers of all ages. The unique blend of the paranormal with Greek mythology is breathtaking and will leave you dying for more.
