Guest Post from author Karyn Pearson ~*~ Giveaway ~*~

Today I'd like to welcome author Karyn Pearson to Pure Jonel.
Let's see what she has to say!

A Glimpse into the World of Spark

One thing I really love about Spark is the way the world looks in my mind. A post-apocalyptic world, destroyed by war; the cities are in ruins, survivors of the war have built new townships and outposts on the outskirts of major metropolitan areas. Landmarks that contemporary readers would easily recognize lie in shambles, mere echoes of the majestic structures that they once were. This war-torn landscape was inspired by the scenery in the 2011 film adaptation of the graphic novel Priest. Once I saw the way the world was designed in Priest, I knew that I wanted my novel’s universe to look something like that.

So where and when do the events of Spark take place? Throughout the novel, from the not-so-subtle clues, we know we’re following Ardentia on her journey around the ruins of the United States. But aside from cities we’d recognize from today’s world, there are several new towns that we have no idea where they are. First and foremost, is the town of Ira Finem, Ardentia’s home town.

Ira Finem is located near the Oklahoma, Arkansas, and Texas border. I had no real reason for choosing that particular spot. I was simply staring at a map of the United States one day while still in the “imagining” stage of Spark, and that spot in particular called to me. I instinctively knew that that would be the place where Ardentia would call home.

Everywhere else Ardentia goes, we pretty much know where she is relative to the world. I’ve covered the where, but what about the when? It’s never explicitly stated when Spark takes place. The synopsis hints at it if you look at the beginning lines and think of the breakdown of time provided relative to present day.

When I first started writing Spark, I didn’t even know what year it was in that universe. It wasn’t until I was just starting the revisions on book two of the Hellfire Trilogy, Inferno, that I took the time to put together a timeline of events. After a great deal of thinking, checking my continuity, and going over scenes in my mind and what the season looked like at the time I envisioned it, I figured out that when Ardentia first begins her quest, it is sometime in May 2150. By the end of the novel, it’s October.

There are still plenty of other secrets in the timeline, but spoilers abound. For now, those details about the world of Spark must be kept under wraps. One day, I’ll divulge everything. But until then, my hands are tied and my lips are sealed.

Book Blurb:

For centuries, the powers of Heaven and Hell have been at war, locked in a perpetual stalemate. Fifty years ago, the war spilled out on Earth and the last modern age of man ended. Humanity now finds itself at the brink of annihilation, barely surviving in small pockets of civilization scattered across the globe. But even in the direst of circumstances, the human spirit lives on.

Now, in this post-apocalypse, humanity has but one choice: resist or die. In order to combat the forces of Hell, man has learned to fight, training from their youth to hunt the demons that threaten their very existence.

Twenty-five years ago, a demon hunter dared rise against an ancient demon family, the Saligia—the Seven Deadly Sins—and was cursed for her defiance. The curse appeared in the guise of an innocent: the huntress’s own daughter, Ardentia, who had been born with a demon soul attached to her own.

In the present day, Ardentia, now grown, seeks to free her mother from her curse by hunting down the demons responsible. But the road ahead will be difficult now that the demon within her has awakened. Trusting him is dangerous, especially when he can turn on her at a moment’s notice. Others have warned her that succumbing to the demon will be her own downfall.

Now Ardentia must decide what she’s willing to lose: her mother’s freedom or herself.
