Interview with Valarie Carey

Today I'd like to welcome Valarie Carey to Pure Jonel.
Let's see what she has to tell us today!

Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about yourself?
A .. I'm a Brooklynite, retired NYPD Police Sergeant, mother of one daughter with 2 bonus daughters, I sit on the board of Brooklyn CARES Mentoring Movement, I am the CEO of a telecommunications and energy business, TOTM! Coach and I advocate for women's menstrual empowerment through self awareness, understanding and acceptance.

Q ~ What are your favourite things to do with your spare time?
A.. In my spare time which I have little of.. some of my favorite things I like to do are catching up on my favorite shows that I've dvr'd, I love to knit and crochet, read and travel.
Q ~ Tea or coffee?
A... Tea!

Q ~ Are there any causes that are close to your heart?
A.. Mentoring would be a cause that is close to my heart. I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child. Another cause that would be close to my heart would be menstrual awareness. I believe more women and girls can benefit from knowing more about their bodies as well as the alternatives to menstrual health.
Q ~ How did you handle the change from being an NYC Police Sergeant to being an entrepreneur?
A.. I think I handled the change gradually but I certainly did have to adjust. When I was a Sergeant I went to work and pretty much the tasks for the day were laid out for me. But as an entrepreneur the tasks are upon you, you must set your own schedule because you're now your own boss.
Q ~ What can one expect from your radio show?
A. When someone tunes into TOTM! Tea Talk which airs on Blogtalk radio an internet radio station, they can expect to get tips and advice and candid conversation about all those things relevant to that Time Of The Month! We sometimes have guests who join the show but all topics tie into the subject of the menstrual cycle, TOTM! So you may hear advice about exercise, nutrition, spirituality, because all those things help shape our monthly menstrual cycles, physically, mentally, spiritually.
Q ~ What inspired you to create your TOTM calendar?
A. My daughter Shelby has been the Muse behind the whole TOTM! movement and how I even came up with the concept of TOTM! Time Of The Month! The Ultimate Period Planner. It was originally meant for her only...but then I decided to publish it.
Q ~ Can you tell us a bit about your calendar?
A. The book is more than a calendar... it's part calendar part book. It's great for the ladies to stay organized but also has special pages just for tracking your monthly period. You're able to keep track of your flow, how heavy or light it may be. You're able to track your moods and pains and symptoms as well as any remedies you may have used. The book also gives you a sample period menu, foods to eat during your TOTM! to help prevent bloating, cramping and other pms symptoms. Overall I believe the book is a great communication tool between daughters and their parents and women and their gynecologists.

Q ~ If you could give our readers one piece of advice to live by, what would it be?
A. I would encourage all tweens, teens, and women who have a monthly menstrual cycle to embrace the process because it will happen for the majority of us every month for at least 40 years. So if you have a positive outlook on your period you'll have more painfree periods in the future. And if they want to learn more I can coach them. Until then... "May every TOTM! be a So Happy one!"
